Course Description

ACCT 538 Forensic Accounting and the Legal Environment explores concepts of forensic accounting as a theoretical process and the diverse ways through which it integrates into the legal system. This course provides students with a comprehensive view of how accountants and auditors, through forensic accounting, play key roles in legal work. Topics covered in this course include collecting and documentation of evidence to build a case, fraud detection techniques, investigative techniques, the art of interviewing, data mining, reporting results of fraud investigation, supporting criminal prosecution, and working with attorneys. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the roles of forensic accountants and auditors in supporting litigation as expert witness or primary investigator.
  • Apply accounting theories and valuation practices to support litigation and legal investigations.
  • Analyze techniques and methods of fraud investigation and detection used for fraud cases.
  • Develop investigative skills in collecting, analyzing, and assessing evidential matter and interpreting and communicating findings.
