Course Description

DHS 700 Environmental Public Health examines the environmental effects on human health. In this course, students study heavy metal pollution, the biological effects of arsenic (on reproductive health, mainly), the effects of soil organic carbon, chemical pollution of drinking water, climate change and vector-borne diseases, marine fuels, particulate matter, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Throughout this course, students explore the molecular and biological aspects of the environment and human health to ensure the well-being of the Earth, its inhabitants, and ecosystems. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the environmental impacts on human health.
  • Learn and discuss the effects of various forms of pollution on human health.
  • Learn and discuss the biological effects of soil organic carbon, climate change and vector-borne diseases, marine fuels, and particulate matter.
  • Critically analyze the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their effectiveness in protecting human health from environmental impacts.
