Course Description

DHS 710 Nursing Leadership Theory is an advanced nursing leadership theory course emphasizing the critical perspective. This course fosters dialogue about the leadership processes and how leadership roles are understood, experienced, and enacted through exploring leadership theory. The ultimate goal of this course is for students to apply theory to practice not by exploring a laundry list of leadership theories but by meaningfully interpreting, evaluating, and applying theory in nursing practice and leadership roles. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Adopt a critical perspective on leadership theory as applied to nursing practice.
  • Critically analyze gaps between the knowledge generated from the formal, academic study of leadership and its translation into everyday nursing practice.
  • Develop proficiency in meaningfully interpreting, evaluating, and applying leadership theory to issues and challenges in nursing practice.
  • Gain proficiency in harnessing critical social theories to address justice issues in nursing practice.
