Course Description

DHS 810 Public Health Theory and Practice explores the determinants of good health at the population level to help patients through and beyond the episodes of illness that bring them into surgeries and hospitals. This course is divided into two parts. The first part tackles core global public health knowledge and skills, underpinned by the relevant theory and how such theory is applied to practice. The second part of the course focuses on various public health contexts, highlighting the life-course approach to improving population health, underpinned by the relevant theory and how such theory is applied to practice. (Formerly DHS 810 Key Concepts in Public Health)

  • Understand both theories and practice in global public health.
  • Understand the determinants of good health at the population level to help patients through and beyond the episodes of illness that bring them into surgeries and hospitals.
  • Critically analyze issues in public health practice and find solutions to these issues through insights from the relevant theories and body of evidence.
