Course Description

DPSY 701 Advanced Psychopathology is an advanced course on psychopathology, emphasizing the conceptual foundations for research on the psychological treatment of major mental disorders, the long-term course of illness and functioning of treated individuals, and unexplored areas that require further research. This course examines long-term studies on psychoses, bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, and substance use disorders, among others, as well as unresolved issues in diagnosis and treatment. Students also learn about topics in psychopathology that are considerably understudied to understand the shape and focus of outcomes research as influenced by breakthrough findings on antecedents, risk factors, and effect modifiers (Formerly DPSY 701 Psychopathology). 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the conceptual foundations of research on the treatment of major mental disorders, the long-term course of illness, and the functioning of treated individuals.
  • Develop critical thinking skills, knowledge base, and skills of the future clinical scientists in psychology.
  • Learn and discuss the shape and focus of outcomes research.
  • Critically analyze the unresolved issues in diagnosing, assessing, and treating various psychopathologies.
