Course Description

DPSY 702 History of Psychology examines the history of psychology, theorists of psychology and their scholarship, and how the theories are linked to ideas in Western and Eastern philosophy. In particular, this course covers historical landmarks that provide a background for understanding the field of psychology, with attention to philosophical ideas that exemplify how philosophical exploration can inform professional practice in psychology. Students also learn the sequence of people, events, theories, and ideas that comprise the history of psychology and the philosophical implications of the historical development of psychology. Through this course, students develop critical thinking to explore philosophical implications, the nature of philosophical problems, and the relevance of philosophical questions that provide a deeper understanding of modern psychology.
