Course Description

DPSY 703 Applied Developmental Psychology examines how developmental theory and research evidence are applied to practice in psychology to help young people avoid or overcome the hazards in life, maximize their capacities, and attain optimal competence in social and cognitive spheres. Through this course, students explore topics and issues that affect the development of young people, as well as strategies for transferring research findings to developmental practitioners who, in turn, inform policymaking and program development. Students also learn how to adopt a research orientation to real-world problems, including aspects of dysfunction and atypical development, parenting, educational factors, and psychologists’ professional practice (Formerly DPSY 703 Developmental Issues in Clinical Psychology).

  • Understand how developmental theory and research evidence are applied to practice in clinical psychology to benefit young people.
  • Determine strategies for transferring research findings to developmental practitioners.
  • Learn and discuss the contributions of developmental psychology to policymaking and program development.
