Course Description

DPSY 802 Intellectual Disability Assessment and Therapies examines evidence-based assessment methods and instruments and various psychological therapies for intellectual disabilities. In particular, through this course, students learn about the theories and science of intellectual disabilities, assessment of intellectual functioning, and treatments to improve the quality of life of individuals with such disabilities. This course emphasizes the psychological therapies for intellectual disability, including cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based interventions for a range of mental health and emotional problems that include anxiety, depression, anger, and psychotic disorders among individuals with intellectual disability (Formerly DPSY 802 Intellectual Assessment).

  • Learn and discuss evidence-based assessment methods and instruments, as well as various psychological therapies for intellectual disabilities.
  • Critically analyze the theories and science of intellectual disabilities.
  • Understand issues related to the assessment of intellectual functioning.
  • Learn and discuss the cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, and mindfulness therapies for psychological problems associated with intellectual disabilities.
