Course Description

DPSY 805 Clinical Practice in Psychotherapy explores a range of empirical studies to demonstrate whether and how psychotherapy works to guide clinical practice. This course critically assesses the evidence for the effectiveness of psychotherapy and mechanisms of behavioral change, as well as the conflicting views regarding the significance and relevance of specific treatment methods in relation to others. Students also learn the most effective clinical processes in psychotherapy, the necessary and sufficient conditions for positive behavioral change, and interpret assessment results. Topics in this course are grouped into major themes, including the historical, methodological, and conceptual foundations of psychotherapy, evaluating the determinants of therapeutic efficacy, major approaches in psychotherapy, and evidence on applications in special groups and settings (DPSY 805 Advanced Psychotherapy).

  • Proficiently explain whether and how psychotherapy works to guide clinical practice.
  • Critically analyze scientific evidence on psychotherapy’s effectiveness and behavioral change mechanisms.
  • Learn and discuss the most effective clinical processes in psychotherapy.
