Course Description

DPSY 812 Environmental Psychology explores the nature and nuances of the interrelationships between humans and their surroundings by analyzing different critical developments and issues in environmental psychology. In this course, the environment is not limited to natural and built physical surroundings but also the broader socio-cultural and political environment in which people live and how this environment affects emotions, behavior, and cognition. Students learn the foundational theories and frameworks on environmental psychology, urban ecological design, human relationships with nature, architecture, personal space, territoriality, and work-related psychopathologies. Other topics covered in this course include the psychological dimensions of sustainability, debates on human spatial reorientation, the psychology behind environmentally responsible behavior, and environmental change and psychological impact (Formerly DPSY 812 Biological Bases of Behavior).

  • Understand the nature and nuances of the human-environment interrelationships.
  • Learn and discuss how the environment influences human feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and experiences.
  • Critically analyze foundational theories and concepts in environmental psychology.
  • Learn and discuss the issues in environmental psychology and how to address these issues.
