Course Description

DPSY 826 Cognition and Emotion, designed for post-graduate students, focuses on the interactions between cognition and emotion and how these interactions influence human behavior. In particular, this course explores the theories and empirical evidence regarding the interplay between emotional and cognitive processes. Students also learn about the contemporary psychology of emotion and mood influence on cognitive processes such as attention, thinking, decision-making, and judgment. This course also explores the role of emotion in memory, the processing of emotional information, and emotion perception. The topics covered in this course are organized according to five categories: biological factors and considerations; cognitive processes in emotion; social cognition; individual differences; and problems, disorders, and treatment (Formerly DPSY 826 Learning, Cognition, and Emotion). 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the interactions between cognition and emotion and how these interactions affect human behavior.
  • Critically analyze the theories and conceptualizations of human cognition and emotion.
  • Explore the empirical evidence on the interplay between emotions and cognition.
  • Learn and discuss the role of emotion in memory, the processing of emotional information, and emotion perception.
