Course Description

DPSY 850 Positive Clinical Psychology examines the development of positive clinical psychology (PCP), which reflects the integration of the two fields of positive psychology and clinical psychology that have developed independently despite numerous convergences in research foci and aims. Through this course, students learn the requisite skills for understanding and treating psychological disorders with emphasis on emotional, psychological, and social well-being to improve people’s mental health and reduce the risk of psychological disorders. Students learn how to focus clinical psychology practice on people’s strengths, aside from dysfunctions, to help them lead healthy, happy lives. Topics in this course are organized according to five themes: developing positive clinical psychology, personality and individual differences, disorders, positive psychology interventions in clinical practice, and reinterpreting existing therapies. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn and discuss the development of the field of PCP.
  • Critically analyze positive psychological theories explaining psychopathology and well-being and apply these theories to clinical settings.
  • Understand and treat psychological disorders with an emphasis on emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
  • Focus clinical psychology practice on people’s strengths, aside from dysfunctions, to help them lead healthy, happy lives.
