Course Description

DPSY 855 Ethical and Legal Issues for School Psychologists brings together the ethical principles and standards, laws, and their associated issues pertinent to the delivery of school psychological services. This course teaches students the theories, principles, and practical issues in school psychological services. This course also explores strategies to anticipate and prevent ethical and legal problems and the appropriate ethical-legal decision-making model for school psychologists to enable the practitioner to make informed, well-reasoned choices in resolving problems when they do occur. Other topics covered in this course include ethical-legal issues in educating students with disabilities, psychoeducational assessment, school-based interventions, working with teachers and parents, research, and supervision.  

Learning Outcomes:

  • Proficiently explain ethical principles and standards to which school psychologists adhere.
  • Learn and discuss relevant laws, regulations, and policies for delivering school psychological services.
  • Critically analyze the theories, principles, and practical issues in school psychological services.
  • Develop decision-making proficiency to prevent or resolve legal and ethical issues in school psychology.
