Course Description

This course explores spatial economics, focusing on urban and regional economic growth and development. Through this course, students learn about the different perspectives under which economists have studied complex spatial economic systems. In particular, students learn about the interactions among international or regional trading partners, the functioning of financial and labor markets as social network structures and strategic choices of single firms and households.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand why cities form, the spatial structure of the urban economy, and the hierarchy of cities from the economic perspective.
  • Apply economic theories when investigating social problems within cities and regions.
  • Critically analyze urban and regional growth and development policies.
  • Assess theoretical urban and regional economics models in the light of empirical evidence.
