Course Description

ECON 667 Institutions, Economic Growth, and Policy examines how and why institutions and their policies influence economic growth and development. In particular, students learn about the theoretical and empirical relationships between institutions and economic growth. Topics covered in this course include “appropriate institutions,” liberalized credit markets, the influence of institutions on productivity, institutional and regulatory reforms in the OECD, the influence of innovation and entrepreneurship on growth, and the effects of economic development on transitions to democracy. (Formerly ECON 667 : Economic Institutions and Growth Policy Analysis)

  • Learn about the institutions that play a role in economic growth and development.
  • Critically analyze institutional policies, their quality, and how they impact economic growth.
  • Critically assess the institutional differences between developed and developing countries and their impacts on income gaps.
  • Understand institutional policies on innovation that can drive economic growth.
