ENV 554 Environmental Health Ethics is a special topic course determined by the student’s
needs and interests in consultation with the Public Health faculty member. This course on
environmental health ethics explores the conflicts between protecting the environment and
promoting human health. Students learn about making ethical decisions on environmental health
issues and how to apply ethical decisions to various issues, such as pesticide use, antibiotic
resistance, nutrition policy, vegetarianism, urban development, occupational safety, disaster
preparedness, and global climate change. This course also highlights the scientific and technical
background for understanding these issues. Through this course, students explore how human
values and concerns in health, economic development, rights, and justice interact with
environmental protection.
