Course Description

This course is designed to cover important concepts in epidemiology, epidemiologic methods, and their application in epidemiological research. Emphasis is placed on measures and quantitative techniques, proper interpretation and explanation of quantitative measures and results. (Note: This course is intended for learners with less than five years of work experience in health and/or human service fields.)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the principles and limitations of epidemiologic research methods.
  • Describe a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, time, and place.
  • Comprehend basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of epidemiologic data in an applied setting.
  • Apply the basic terminology and definitions of epidemiology.
  • Calculate epidemiologic measures, such as incidence and prevalence; rate adjustment; measures of association, etc.
  • Communicate epidemiologic information to lay and professional audiences.
  • Draw appropriate inferences from epidemiologic data.
