Course Description

This independent study course allows students to explore topics in epidemiology based on their needs and interests, in consultation with a Public Health faculty member. The chosen independent study topic should align with the student’s degree plan and admission essay, where possible. (Note: This course is intended for learners with less than five years of work experience in health and/or human service fields.)

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify key sources of data for epidemiologic purposes.
  2. Describe a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, time, and place.
  3. Comprehend basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of epidemiologic data.
  4. Apply the basic terminology and definitions of epidemiology.
  5. Calculate basic epidemiology measures.
  6. Communicate epidemiologic information to lay and professional audiences.
  7. Draw appropriate inferences from epidemiologic and public health data.
  8. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of epidemiologic reports.
