Course Description

This comprehensive course provides an in-depth exploration of major topics in epidemiology as encountered in public health practice. It covers study designs, descriptive epidemiology, quantitative measures, and terminology. (Note: This course is intended for learners with at least five years of work experience in health and/or human service fields.) The assumption is that the learner has already completed a graduate-level or professional-level course in epidemiology.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify key sources of data for public health purposes.
  • Describe a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, time, and place.
  • Explain the importance of epidemiology and the public health sciences for informing scientific, ethical, economic, and political discussions of health issues.
  • Comprehend basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of epidemiologic data.
  • Apply the basic terminology and definitions of epidemiology.
  • Communicate epidemiologic and public health information to lay and professional audiences.
