Course Description

This advanced course delves into intermediate concepts, principles, and methods of statistics as applied to public health issues. SPSS is the statistical software package for the course, utilizing both “point-and-click” and command syntax. (Note: This course is intended for learners with at least five years of work experience in health and/or human service fields.) The assumption is that the learner has already completed a graduate-level or professional-level course in applied statistics/biostatistics.

Learning Outcomes:

Describe the roles biostatistics serves in the discipline of public health.
Apply concepts of probability for use in statistical situations confronting public health professionals.
Describe preferred methodological alternatives to commonly used statistical methods when assumptions are not met.
Apply common intermediate statistical methods for inference.
Apply descriptive and inferential methodologies according to the type of study design for answering a particular research question.
Apply basic informatics techniques with vital statistics and public health records in the description of public health characteristics and in public health research and evaluation. (This includes the competent use of statistical software.)
Interpret results of statistical analyses found in public health studies.
Develop written and oral presentations based on statistical analyses for both public health professionals and educated lay audiences.
