Course Description

This course examines the ethical issues of clinical services and health policy globally. Applying a comparative, or multicultural, approach, this course compares and contrasts various perspectives on ethical issues in different countries and cultures, including different views about informed consent, withholding or withdrawing treatment, physician-assisted suicide, reproductive health issues, research with human subjects, the right to health care, and rationing of limited resources. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the ethical issues arising from patient and clinician movement across national borders.
  • Critically analyze the impacts of culture on people and the ethical issues of clinical services and policy.
  • Understand universal ethical values that apply to all human societies and transcend the values of a particular culture.
  • Critically analyze ethical theories and apply these theories to resolve ethical dilemmas in clinical services and health policy.
