Course Description

This course introduces students to the theory, laws, and practice of human rights protection, rooted in international law. It explores the intersections between international and domestic human rights protections, beginning with human rights theories and progressing through the international human rights framework. Using the United Nations’ human rights lenses, students learn how to protect and enforce human rights. The course offers opportunities to delve into special interest topics such as the rights of Indigenous peoples, refugees, and women.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the international human rights framework, its origins, and underlying theories.
  • Critically evaluate the assertion, enforcement, and/or violation of specific human rights.
  • Analyze the linkages between international and domestic law regarding human rights.
  • Comprehend the roles of lawyers in human rights protection and their contributions to ongoing law reform processes related to human rights.
