Course Description

M.Phil 525 Philosophy of Religion explores the fundamental distinctions between philosophy and religion and the meaning of a philosophy of religion. Through this course, students critically analyze the various philosophical concepts, positions, issues, and controversies in religion. Topics covered in this course include arguments about the existence of God, God and morality, religious experience and belief in God, arguments against belief in the existence of God, the problem of evil, God and life after death, miracles, revelation, prayer, and rationality without evidence. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Differentiate between the realms of religion, philosophy, and philosophy of religion.
  • Identify and scrutinize the various ‘attributes’ ascribed to God in the Western philosophical tradition.
  • Critically analyze arguments against and for the existence of God.
  • Think independently when drawing conclusions about the philosophy of religion.
