Course Description

MIR 500 International Relations and Sustainable Development examines international relations
in relation to sustainable international development. In this course, students learn the
sociopolitical dynamics of global developmental and environmental affairs based on established
theories, models, and frameworks about government objectives, civil society activism, and
societal expectations in sustainable international development for the next generation. This
course covers the evolving roles of the state, capital, citizens, and civil society in sustainable
development; security, mobility, and geopolitics; and vulnerability and adaptation to
environmental change. (Formerly MIR 500 Introduction to International Relations).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the theories, models, and frameworks of sustainable international
    development.
  • Critically analyze the issues impacting international development and sustainability
    from the international relations perspective.
  • Understand the multi-actor struggles against injustices caused by current social
    arrangements.
  • Learn and discuss the critical resources to enable sustainable international
    development.
