Course Description

MPH 501 Principles of Public Health explores the essential principles, theories, and public health models. This course was designed to prepare public health students by emphasizing the five of the core areas of public health, namely, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences. In particular, this course explores topics on descriptive and analytical epidemiology, descriptive and inferential biostatistics, the social and behavioral sciences, models and methods in health education and health promotion, population dynamics and control, environmental issues that affect health, and the organization, financing, and delivery of health services and public health systems in the United States. In this course, students also learn about program planning, budgeting, management, and assessment in public health initiatives, as well as systems thinking and leadership in public health.

  • Learn and discuss essential principles, theories, and concepts in public health.

  • Critically analyze public health structure and administration in the United States.

  • Understand public health assessments, measurements, and methods.

  • Develop critical thinking skills and systems thinking relative to public health.
