Course Description

MPH 503 Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health examines the principles, concepts, and methods of recent epidemiologic investigation of health-related events and processes. Through this course, students gain a core epidemiologic toolset that helps them understand the place of epidemiology in general health thinking and communicate and apply the principles of epidemiology. Students learn to read and evaluate health-related work critically using epidemiologic principles. Topics covered in this course are organized according to four themes: foundations and principles of epidemiology, study design and interpretation, data analysis, and special issues. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Critically analyze the principles, concepts, and epidemiology methods in public health.

  • Learn and apply epidemiologic methods to various settings in public health practice.

  • Learn to interpret the results of data analysis for public health research, policy, or practice.

  • Understand ethical and legal principles in collecting, maintaining, utilizing, and disseminating epidemiologic data.
