Course Description

M.Phil 510 Atheism examines the philosophical facets of atheism from historical and contemporary perspectives. This course teaches students the explicit, constructive, and comprehensive conversation between philosophy and atheism to understand how atheist thought intersects with ideas and positions from different philosophical and theological sub-disciplines. Moreover, students also learn the foundational issues and persistent controversies that underpin philosophical thought about atheism to understand better the major developments in the history of philosophy and their impacts on the modern atheistic worldview. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the philosophical facets of atheism from the historical and contemporary perspectives.
  • Critically analyze the objections to theism and atheism, including logical, evidential, normative, and prudential views.
  • Critically analyze the relationship between atheism and metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy oriented around pragmatism, postmodernism, freedom, education, violence, and happiness.
  • Critically analyze discussions surrounding atheism within the current intellectual landscape, evaluating perspectives and arguments nuancedly.
