Course Description

M.Phil 536 Ethics and Moral Philosophy delves into the philosophical questions of how humanity should live and act and how people might live. Through this course, students find the answers to these questions beyond intuitive responses to focus instead on clear and consistent answers based on ethics and moral philosophy. In the process, students learn about ethical living from the moral philosophies of Aristotle, Spinoza, Kant, Mill, Nietzsche, and Levinas. (Formerly M.Phil 536 Ethics)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Differentiate between ‘ethics,’ the ‘philosophy of ethics,’ and ‘moral philosophy.’
  • Critically analyze three philosophical questions of how humanity should live and act, and how people might live.
  • Identify and critically analyze attributes applied to moral conduct in the Western philosophical tradition to evaluate the coherence of ethical theories.
  • Apply ethics and moral philosophy to contemporary issues.
