Course Description

M.Phil 570 Existentialism explores existentialism from the perspective of philosophy by examining the major themes in the works of Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and de Beauvoir. Particular emphasis is placed on the shared concerns and disagreements between the major philosophers. Through this course, students critically analyze existential themes, including freedom, death and mortality, phenomenological experiences and moods, authenticity and responsibility and the denigration of their opposites, and the rejection of any external determination of morality or value. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the key themes in existential philosophy according to the works of major philosophers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and analyze existential themes within philosophical works, applying a nuanced and critical approach to analysis.
  • Acquire familiarity with existential concepts and their relevance beyond the temporal and geographical context of their origin, recognizing their enduring significance in broader philosophical and cultural discussions.
  • Critically analyze the influence of major existentialist philosophers on poststructuralism.
