M.Phil 570 Existentialism explores existentialism from the perspective of philosophy by examining the major themes in the works of Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and de Beauvoir. Particular emphasis is placed on the shared concerns and disagreements between the major philosophers. Through this course, students critically analyze existential themes, including freedom, death and mortality, phenomenological experiences and moods, authenticity and responsibility and the denigration of their opposites, and the rejection of any external determination of morality or value.
