Course Description

PhDTh 834 Catholic Theological Ethics examines the connected themes of Catholic moral theology and Catholic sexual and marital ethics. In this course, students learn the revisionist and traditionalist views of Catholic theological ethics to find contemporary answers to ancient ethical problems. Students also learn the appropriate ethical theory in alignment with theological models, shifting from a classicist to a historically conscious worldview endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church when seeking solutions to ethical dilemmas.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn and discuss the connected themes of Catholic moral theology and sexual and marital ethics.
  • Understand the revisionist and traditionalist views of Catholic theological ethics to find contemporary answers to ancient ethical problems.
  • Learn the normative implications for both general and sexual/marital ethics of Catholic tradition’s methodological and anthropological developments.
  • Develop the skills to dialogue with the Catholic Church about ethics, particularly sexual and marital ethics, a dialogue that must necessarily include all in the communion, namely, the Church, laity, theologians, and hierarchy.
