Course Description

PhDTh 850 Virtue Ethics examines the history of virtue ethics from Aristotle to Nietzsche and the ideas of such contemporary writers as Ricoeur and Levinas. Through this course, students learn the major themes dealt with by moral theory and how a virtue ethics approach to them differs from those of other traditions. This course also covers practical problems of moral complexity, such as abortion, euthanasia, and integrity in politics, and how they might be approached from a virtue perspective. (Formerly PhDTh 850 Virtues Ethics)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn and discuss the historical development of virtue ethics.
  • Understand how virtue-based ethics challenge moral theory, which is traditionally founded on moral obligation.
  • Critically analyze the critiques against virtue ethics, particularly the charges of relativism and egoism.
  • Learn to apply virtue ethics virtues to contemporary life, including the moral dimensions of professional roles.
