Course Description

PhDTh 861 Theology and Culture explores the roles of theology and the churches in contemporary culture, emphasizing identity and attention. This course draws from various perspectives in the theology-culture debate, as well as from case studies in the USA and Europe.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how culture impacts theology and vice versa.
  • Learn the myriad ways in which culture is shaping contemporary Christianity and how essential an appreciation of this dynamic is for the self-understanding of churches and theology.
  • Understand the ongoing contribution that theology can make to public life in an era often perceived to be dominated by consumerism and secularity.
  • Critically analyze cases from the USA and Europe.
