Course Description

PhDTh 866 Theological Anthropology explores what it means to be a human being in relation to God. Through this course, students learn traditional theological perspectives on the human person and how contemporary cultural, political, and scientific developments currently challenge these perspectives. Moreover, students critically analyze the works of Roman Catholic theologians from different sub-disciplines to engage with and respond to the resulting tensions in theological anthropology, with a particular focus on the themes of nature, self, and relationality.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand “human nature,” “personhood,” “freedom,” “soul,” “relation,” and other concepts in relation to God’s image and likeness, marked by sin but, through God’s grace, saved to a new life in Christ.
  • Learn and discuss traditional theological perspectives on the human person.
  • Critically analyze how contemporary cultural, political, and scientific developments currently challenge traditional theological perspectives.
  • Engage with and respond to the resulting tensions in theological anthropology, focusing on the themes of nature, self and relationality.
