Course Description

PhDTh 875 Judaism allows students to engage with Judaism, its theology, doctrines, divisions, and contemporary conditions. In particular, this course delves into Judaism’s principal doctrines and explores the more essential forms of modern and contemporary Judaism, highlighting topics of specific interest in contemporary Judaic life. This way, students learn the focal points of an ancient and contemporary religion, defining a context in which diverse texts and facts of Judaism fit and make sense. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore Judaism’s principal doctrines, theology, and the more essential forms of modern and contemporary Judaism.
  • Understand God, Torah, and Israel as principal parts of Judaic theology in the Rabbinic writings of classical and medieval times.
  • Develop and understanding of the principal documents of the ancient rabbis: the Mishnah, Midrash, and Talmud.
  • Learn the various religious systems of modern and contemporary times that fall under Judaism.
