Course Description

PSY 508 Marriage and Family Theory examines marital and familial relationships and the psychological theories that underpin therapies designed for marriages and families. Through this course, students learn the historical developments and major conceptualizations of marriage and family therapy, evidence-based models, and their practical distinctions. In this course, emphasis is given to the professional and personal lenses of the therapist, selecting a supervisor, conducting research, confronting and addressing ethical issues, and working effectively with multicultural families. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Critically analyze psychological theories that underpin therapies designed for marriages and families.

  • Understand marital and familial relationships and their issues to determine the appropriate therapies that address these issues.

  • Understand evidence-based marriage and family therapy models, their underlying theories, and their practical distinctions.

  • Immerse in the roles of the marriage and family therapist using personal and professional lenses to deliver effective therapeutic services.
