Course Description

PSY 526 Diversity Issues in Psychology explores how differences among individuals generate a broad range of psychological responses that determine how others perceive them and the effects they have. This course also introduces students to psychological research and theory relative to individual differences. Moreover, across core psychology topics such as identity, brain and mind, personality, cognition, behaviors, and relationships, students investigate the evidence for diversity in experience at three levels: within an individual, between individuals, and between groups. Students apply theory and evidence to understand the historical, political, educational, economic, and societal factors that shape how people think about and respond to diversity and the diverse life trajectories of others. In this course, students reflect upon their life experiences to succeed professionally in bringing people together for mutual benefit. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn how differences among individuals generate a broad range of psychological responses.

  • Critically analyze psychological research and theory relative to individual differences.

  • Investigate the benefits of diversity at three levels: within an individual, between individuals, and between groups.

  • Apply theory and evidence to understand the historical, political, educational, economic, and societal factors shaping how people think about and respond to diversity.
