PSYA 800 Freudian Psychoanalysis introduces students to Sigmund Freud’s radical innovation into psychiatry and psychotherapy, emphasizing psychoanalysis. In this course, students learn about Freud’s psychodynamic approach to psychoanalysis, his account of unconscious-conscious dynamics in everyday life, his five major case studies that played crucial roles in his development of psychoanalysis, and his consolidation of psychoanalytic theory and practice. Students also explore Freud’s modifications of psychoanalysis during and following the 1914–1918 World War and their legacy for psychotherapy today.
